CS373 Spring 2021: Blog 5

  1. What did you do this past week? Due to the winter storm in Texas, this was a pretty short week in terms of classes since they didn’t start back up officially until Wednesday. However, once class started up again, I learned about more data structures in Python and the requirements for IDB1. My team also finished our project proposal.
  2. What’s in your way? Designing the API for IDB1 sounds a bit daunting since I’m much less experienced at backend, and since we’re not really going over it in class. I hope my teammates and I will be able to have enough time to both learn it and implement it well.
  3. What will you do next week? I’ll still be attending class and meeting up with my team more to discuss/start the project. We still need to set up AWS and start thinking about how we want to structure our API schema.
  4. If you read it, what did you think of the Single Responsibility Principle? It’s definitely an important thing to keep in mind when designing software, however, I feel like best practices like these are always good in theory but hard to remember/implement for me. But, it’s better to start with these best practices from the beginning instead of writing spaghetti code in the first place then going back and fixing it later.
  5. What was your experience of IDB1 and reduce? All of my team members are pleasant to work with, so I’m looking forward to how IDB1 turns out. It’s really exciting that we’re going to be making a full stack web application. As for reduce, I’ve definitely had experience with it before (like using the reduce function in Javascript) so the HackerRank activity that we did in class wasn’t difficult.
  6. How did you fare in the storm? It was definitely a memorable experience. We didn’t have power or water for a couple of days, so my roommates and I went to the GDC a lot. However, it wasn’t too bad, and being with my friends definitely helped.
  7. What made you happy this week? Seeing all of my deadlines get pushed back relieved a lot of the stress I had built up last week. I feel like I was able to get a good break during the storm and now I’m not feeling as burnt out.
  8. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week? I definitely recommend watching the Postman video that Alvin posted on Canvas. It was a good way for me to get familiarized with what Postman can do for the project.
